Overated + overpriced. Went out looking for some good local food and "fine dining". Starters were tasteless, main course arrived cold and vegetables were burnt, we didn't stay for puddings - The appears to be caught up in its own hype - avoid unless you want to be disappointed.
After eagerly searching the internet for somewhere special to eat out in Norwich we chose By appointment. The food was pricey and overall quality and taste poor. The starters were dry and main course distinctively basic. Building and overall look of the establishment good, but sadly the food let it down.
I visited the restaurant on 15 August 2007. The food was good, the ambience was very pleasing and the staff were warm and polite. It IS a bit pricey but it is excellent for a special occassion. A great place to take someone you are really interested in!
Our first visit to By appointment was following a recommendation by friends. We had a fantastic evening in relaxed surroundings. The service was excellent, the food wonderful and the price extremely reasonable. You have to try it, if you don't you are missing out on a real treat. We will be returning soon.

I have to say that whilst the whole atmosphere was unique and quite cosy, I found the food to be overpriced and some dishes were actually inedible! Maybe we went when the chef was having an off day but the starters were very gloppy and stodgy, my main course of duck was swimming in a dark stodgy sticky sauce and the duck was miles too salty. The vegetables were either ovedrcooked or, in the case of the carrots, rock hard. The wine was great, though and I suppose we did enjoy the rather theatrical reading out of the menu by the staff who were quite attentive. Another major no no for us was the fact that my husband's water glass was bought to our table dirty. That is inexcusable to me, I'm afraid. The minimum I expect is clean cutlery and glasses.I think this place rides on the wave of people who like the fact that is is full of 'antiques' and has a rather dated feel. We will not be going back as I don't feel that the atmosphere justifies the overpriced not very nice food. But then that's just my opinion!
During the 11th century Norwich was the second largest city in England, after London, and one of the most important places in the kingdom...
